A 'Distant' and Diachronic Reading of Artificial Places in a Corpus of Italian and Translated Literary Prose (19th–21st Century)

The settings of literary works reflect economic, political, and social changes, becoming a critical element in defining literary trends and genres. This paper presents the results of a quantitative research work aiming to extract settings from a corpus of Italian and translated literature published between the 19th and 21st centuries, representing a period of profound historical, social, and literary transformations.
After outlining the corpus, the discussion delves into the creation of lexical lists, providing details on the tools and methods used. Finally, the results and some concluding observations on the data will be presented. Conducted through methods of automatic analysis of textual data and following the distant reading approach, the investigation aims to propose a method for the automatic extraction of settings applicable to various lexical categories and textual genres. The second aim of the research is to outline settings, conceived as artificial places, in Italian literature over the past two centuries, also in comparison with foreign works translated into Italian.
