L’uso di risorse online per lo studio sincronico e diacronico del lessico politico. Il caso di “democrazia rappresentativa”

In questo articolo forniamo una panoramica delle risorse documentali reperibili online e utilizzabili per la ricerca sulla storia dei concetti politici, e discutiamo alcune “buone pratiche” volte a ottimizzare l’uso di collezioni di testi digitali nel pubblico dominio nella ricerca storiografica. Il caso di studio utilizzato per illustrare le nostre considerazioni riguarda la ricerca delle occorrenze, in ampie banche dati, archivi e biblioteche digitali, del sintagma “democrazia rappresentativa” (e dei suoi equivalenti in inglese e francese), tra il 1778, primo anno in cui se ne registra l’occorrenza nei nostri dati, e il 1799. La maggior parte delle occorrenze rinvenute tramite un attento processo di selezione e controllo non erano ancora state portate all'attenzione degli studiosi. Nella parte successiva dell’articolo prendiamo in considerazione il contributo che possono apportare alla ricerca sul lessico politico in una prospettiva diacronica strumenti di analisi testuale come Google Books Ngram Viewer, HathiTrust + Bookworm e Sketch Engine. A questo scopo discutiamo dati relative alla frequenza e al profile lessicale di “democrazia” e “democrazia rappresentativa” in corpora storici e contemporanei.
