Author Guidelines

Full articles

All submissions (about 5.000-10.000 words, bibliography excluded) should be written either in English or Italian. The manuscript has to be submitted electronically and to be formatted according to these author guidelines. All papers must include an abstract in both English and in Italian (around 200 words each), and at least 5 keywords in both languages.

Only footnotes are allowed, which means that papers employing endnotes will be rejected.

Pictures and tables must always be provided with captions. No groups of items are allowed; each item must have its own caption.

We ask that you submit your paper either in OpenOffice .odt or Word .docx according to the template provided by RASH - a framework for converting scientific papers into PDF/HTML+RDF. Please, follow one of the two proposed layouts (.odt/RASH o .docx/RASH):

If you need an extended version of the aforementioned instructions, use the following documents:

NB. Please follow rules outlined in the Chicago Manual of Style for bibliographic references. Umanistica Digitale employs Zotero as its bibliographic management tool (https://www.zotero.org/groups/1624882/umanistica_digitale). Authors are therefore asked to use Zotero to format their bibliographies according to the journal's preferred style and to always provide DOIs, where available.

Remember to insert footnotes pointers after punctuation, and to spell out abbreviations the first time they are mentioned.

Non-native speakers of English or Italian, the two official languages of Umanistica Digitale, are asked that their contribution(s) be proofread by a native speaker before submitting to the journal. Our editors are only responsible for minor edits; should they feel that the language of the contribution(s) is below standard, authors will be asked to revise and resubmit.

Reviews and reports

Umanistica Digitale seeks to provide its readers with reviews of relevant books, projects, tools, data-sets, as well as reports of events and project progress reports, in an effort to raise awareness of community activities being carried out both in Italy and internationally.

Reviews of books, projects available online, tools and data-sets (hereafter resources) must address the following: goal (purpose, motivation and audience), context/related research (background literature), research questions (where applicable), method (where applicable), results (where applicable), discussion, conclusions and suggestions for improvement or criticism.

Reviews or reports of events (workshops, tutorials, seminars, (un)conferences, summer schools, etc.) must address the following: organisational details (when and where it took place, organisers' and lecturers' name, attendance number, website if any), goal (topic), expectations, method (was the pace adequate? were the materials clear?), outcome, suggestions for improvements or criticism.

Project progress reports must address the following: Project details/overview (institution(s) involved, team size, budget, duration), Context and Goal (what is the proposed topic and aim of the project), Audience (what is the intended user-base), Methodology, Preliminary results, Expectations (how close/far are you from reaching the proposed aim of the project).

A review or report is between 1,000 and 3,500 words (bibliography excluded) and contributions to the journal are published on a rolling basis, which means that your review would be published shortly after submission and pending editorial approval. Please note that a book or other resource published in English does not necessarily have to be reviewed in English - it can be reviewed in Italian. The time allocated to complete the review is four months. We ask you to follow the aforementioned guidelines (odt/docx).
