Conservativismo intrinseco: i limiti epistemici nelle pratiche di visualizzazione delle Digital Humanities

Abstract

Le tecniche di visualizzazione dell’informazione sono ampiamente impiegate nelle Digital Humanities (DH) a supporto della disseminazione, della ricerca e dell’accesso alle collezioni culturali digitali. Tuttavia, pochi studi analizzano sistematicamente le pratiche di visualizzazione nelle DH, offrendo approfondimenti qualitativi su specifiche scelte progettuali, mentre i risultati quantitativi sono generalmente limitati a scale aggregate (analisi a livello di studio, progetto o interfaccia). Questo contributo si basa su una precedente analisi di 186 progetti web di DH, introducendo una prospettiva più dettagliata e centrata su 587 unità visualizzazione–interazione. Analizzando il rapporto tra tecniche di visualizzazione e di interazione in contesti narrativi e non narrativi, emergono schemi conservativi nella progettazione, suggerendo che le pratiche di visualizzazione nelle DH privilegino soluzioni visive e interattive semplici, familiari e facilmente implementabili, limitando la diversificazione, la ricchezza interpretativa e l’efficacia di prospettive multiple sui dati. Analogamente, i contesti narrativi restano poco sfruttati, spesso basati su soluzioni preconfezionate, e raramente integrati con approcci più esplorativi e non narrativi. Concludiamo che le pratiche di visualizzazione nelle DH sono modellate dai vincoli infrastrutturali più che dagli obiettivi interpretativi, evidenziando la necessità di future ricerche volte a valorizzare gli aspetti interpretativi e a promuovere progettazioni che pongano al centro la dimensione epistemica delle visualizzazioni.
